Artist Statement
finding the stillness in motion
My work is rooted in process. I am deeply interested in the materials, the tools, the feeling of immersion that the work provides. Beginning from intuition, the paintings, collage, sculpture and installations come about through a series of trial and error, discovering what the materials can do, fixing mistakes and in the process making more, fixing those, and so on. In this way my work conveys a sense of freshness and energy. I leave evidence of my revisions as a document of both movement and decisions made along the way. We all have an interest in leaving a mark on the world that says we were here, but in order for art to have meaning beyond the idiosyncrasies of the artist, some truth, beauty or vulnerability needs to be present in the work. I have left some of these in everything I produce.
frontiers:
Color is the primary language of this series. These hard edge paintings take shape as small paper collages which are then rendered onto canvas in acrylics. After the playfulness of building the compositions, I enjoy the strict process of executing the frontiers paintings.
abstracts:
These paintings are explorations of process, experimentation and technique taking place directly on the finished surface. The work is intuitive and built by trial and error. Once the fear of making mistakes is gone it is possible to embrace the pentimento, the erasure and even the repainting of entire canvases.
still life and works on paper:
I have a fascination with vases and pitchers, with the sensuality of the curve and the implicit potential for containing and dispensing that such objects provide. Also, as a collector of ephemera, the use of antique paper makes time an element to these compositions. These collages play with traditional Cubist and Literati painting ideas about space.
installation and performance:
I have a long standing interest in sculpture, installation and performance art, often including three dimensional works, video/sound installations and performance in gallery shows. In 2019 I was able to combine all of these in a stand alone piece called ‘not not but also’. This is an installation based performance piece that uses dance, acting, sound and visual art to examine how we manufacture truth and make meaning from our subjective experiences.
